Understanding NSF International Certification

NSF International is the leading accredited third-party certifier of dietary supplements, functional foods and dietary supplement raw ingredients (ANSI-Accredited Product Certification Body – Accreditation #0216). As an independent, not-for-profit public health organization, they operate with the mission to protect and improve global human health. NSF certifies products and writes standards for food, water and consumer goods and has a 65-year history of protecting public health, safety and environments worldwide.

Under the NSF certification programs, certified products and systems earn the NSF mark, which is respected by consumers, manufacturers, retailers and regulatory agencies. Deeply rooted in science, NSF is widely recognized as the gold standard for quality in areas such as water systems, food safety and health sciences which includes dietary supplements.

Given the fast pace at which many dietary supplements enter the marketplace and reports that suggest that some of these products do not actually contain the ingredients or quantities shown on the label, consumers have cause to be concerned. With such a confusing array of information out there, it can be overwhelming to know where to start when it comes to finding supplements that you can trust. NSF certified supplements must meet rigorous standards that include comprehensive lab testing and extensive evaluation of the manufacturing process to ensure contaminated substances or hidden ingredients are not added to a product.

The 3 Step System for NSF International Product Certification

When selecting a quality supplement, understanding the type of certification, it’s mark and what it represents is can be a battle. NSF International product certification involves three different steps, each with its own mark for clear visual identification.

In addition to the three steps, NSF recently underwent an update to their mark. To help understand the variations and their meaning, here is an overview for easy reference:

NSF International GMP Registration

Verifies that the product is manufactured in a facility that is audited up to twice annually for quality and safety in compliance with Dietary Supplements Good Manufacturing Practices. No mark is allowed on product labels.

NSF International Contents Tested & Certified Certification

Once Step 1 is complete, all product contents are tested for quality, safety and label claims. Products are verified to contain no unsafe levels of contaminants. NSF Contents Tested & Certified mark is allowed on product labels.

NSF International Certified for Sport® Certification

Once Steps 1 and 2 are completed, chosen products can be qualified for sport certification. They undergo an intensive testing and review process lot by lot, to ensure they are free from more than 270 banned substances. At this point, The NSF Certified for Sport® mark is allowed on product labels.

1. It has been produced in a facility that is GMP registered. Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP & cGMP) means honest and accountable manufacturing with regular, and unannounced, on-site inspections of our manufacturing compliance.
2. Toxicological review of the label has been made to make sure all ingredients are permissible in a dietary supplement and that the amount of each ingredient does not exceed NSF’s established typical use levels.
3. The product and label have been tested to verify product formulation and label claims. This ensures what’s on the label is the same as what’s in the product and nothing else.

5. Products are tested lot-by-lot for more than 272 substances which are banned by major athletic organizations and anti-doping associations.

The NSF Certified for Sport® certification program helps athletes, coaches and trainers make more informed decisions when choosing sports supplements. Certified for Sport® is the only independent third-party certification program recognized by MLB, the MLB Players Association, the NHL and the CFL. The MLB, NHL and CFL clubs are only permitted to provide and recommend products that are Certified for Sport®, and players are urged to only use these products. The certification is also recommended by the NFL, PGA, LPGA, CPSDA, Canadian Centre for Ethics in Sports and Taylor Hooton Foundation.
