Do light stretches when you get out of bed. This will help wake you up, get blood flowing, and loosen tight spots throughout the body. Combined with conscious breathing, a morning stretch routine will also help centre you and mentally prep you for your day. This is also a great time to do a brief (or long if you have the time) yoga routine. A sun salutation variation is perfect.
Walk to work or go for a walk outside before heading to work. Getting some fresh air and the heart pumping first thing in the morning is a great way to energize your body and clear your mind for the day.
Start parking at the far end of the parking lot. You can do this at work, the grocery store or anywhere for that matter and the extra walking will do you good.
Take the stairs up to the office. Everyone has heard this one but most people still underestimate the positive health effects it has. Taking the stairs, even if only a few flights at a time, strengthens the muscles of the thighs and hips and challenges the cardiovascular system.
Find a partner and go for a walk at lunch. Commit to walking with someone everyday. This will decrease the likelihood of skipping days and make the experience more social and fun.
Get up from your chair and stretch for 5 minutes. Like the morning stretch this is a great way to get the blood flowing, relieve tight spots, and refresh your body and mind. Long term it will also go a long way towards relieving chronic back pain and maintaining good posture.
Find time to play with your children. Get out in the yard or the park and play soccer, football, tag, or hide and seek. Staying active and having fun can keep you young.
Try walking to the restaurant when eating out. As well as enhancing the overall experience this is a great way to get in a little extra activity around what is usually a higher than normal caloric meal.
If you must watch TV, get up and move around during commercials. Going up and down a flight of stairs twice and doing 20 crunches every commercial will burn a couple hundred calories through the course of a 1-hour program.
Go to bed early. The health benefits of a good sleep are tremendous and the extra energy you will have the next day will serve you well in your quest for health.
